In 2022, the Big Tech landscape was at a crossroads: innovation was advancing, but companies were also closing off. Mistral's co-founders saw the need for a different kind of AI company: a European leader that combines cutting-edge innovation with openness, transparency, cost efficiency, and responsibility. They were determined to democratize AI, making it accessible, customizable, and returning control to users. In April 2023, Mistral was born to put frontier AI in everyone’s hands.
